We’re right in the middle of dreaded Januworry, and if it’s hitting you hard after a fantastically festive holiday season, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate your spending habits and save more in 2020!

Here are 5 tips and tricks to get you on the road to mega savings this year.

  • Loyalty cards for the win

We know your wallet is probably filled to the brim with a card for each shop you frequent. But before you start Marie Kondo-ing that thing, make sure you aren’t getting rid of anything that could save you some big bucks while you shop!

* PRO TIP: Always use your bsmart card in conjunction with your other loyalty cards this way you’ll be saving in two ways!

  • Budget, budget, budget

… and stick to it this time. There are loads of templates online that could help you get started. Otherwise, some old-fashioned pen and paper will do the trick (just make sure you file them all in the same place when you’re done with the budgeting for that month). Even if you don’t use your budget to plan out all your expenses beforehand, you should at least keep track of your spending throughout the month. This will help you suss out the spots where you can cut back and save!

  • Cut back on luxuries

Limit your nights at a restaurant to one or two per month. Or perhaps you should consider one-ply instead of the hefty price tag that goes along with two-ply. (Let’s be honest, it won’t only be helping your wallet, but the planet too!) Another way you can really rack up the rands is by making a cup of coffee at home in a reusable travel mug and taking it with you on the commute to work instead of popping into that trendy coffee shop on the corner that could really add up if you’re not careful.

  • Automate it

If you don’t already have a savings account or pocket linked to your accounts, set it up and set a debit order to automatically debit some cash into your savings on the day you get paid. As the saying goes … you can’t miss what you don’t have and out of sight out of mind is definitely the case with this tip. And if you let the debit order do the work for you, you won’t be able to postpone and accidentally spend that money.

  • Use your rewards

So you’ve swiped every loyalty card in your wallet, and you’ve received those rewards. Now it is time to use them! One discount loaded on your card may not seem like much, but combine them all together and you’re saving with the big guns! The same goes for your bsmart cashback bonus … Put some thought into what you would like to do with it and use it, but use it wisely!
