November. It’s that time of the year for smooth-faced men the world over to get in touch with their primal side, cast their razors aside and proceed to cultivate that sometimes fuzzy, sometimes extravagant, often disarming display of facial hair known as the moustache. And while not many will manage to decorate their upper lip with the panache of, say, a Tom Selleck or a Ron Burgundy, we have to give credit for trying. It is, after all, for a good cause.

Men are often reluctant or embarrassed to put their health first. That’s why Movember exists. It’s an annual charity event run by the Movember Foundation to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, depression and men’s suicide. The idea is to encourage men – or “Mo Bros” – to be aware of any history of cancer in their families, adopt a healthier lifestyle, and to be proactive when it comes to early detection, diagnosis and treatment. It’s a reminder that, when it comes to your health, a bristling broom beats a stiff upper lip any day.

A dashing style for any occasion

Guys, the solution is right under your nose. There’s a vast wealth of manly styles from which to choose, such as the immaculate ‘’Dallas’’ of Matthew McConaughey, the feathered “Horseshoe and Soul Patch” of Johnny Depp, the always-classy “Pencil” of Sammy Davis Jr., the plush “Imperial” of Mel Gibson, the “Dali”, the “Walrus”, the “Zappa”, the “Fu Man Chu”. Whatever lip tickler you select, remember, it’s the moustache on the inside that counts. Ignore the strange looks. Grow a mo. Save a bro.

It’s time to get involved

Movember is not just for the guys. Everyone can help. In South Africa this year, there are three ways in which you can get involved.

  • GROW

You can grow a moustache to inspire donations, conversations and real change.

  • MOVE

You can move by running or walking 60kms over the month. That’s 10kms for every year the average man stands to lose from his life for largely preventable reasons.

  • HOST

You can host by getting your friends together for a Mo-ment and raise funds by doing what you already get a kick out of.

Simple. Head over to the Movember Site and sign up now to start raising funds and awareness for all the dads, brothers, sons and friends in your life.

Gents, get growing! Get involved, spread the word and go for your annual check-ups. And ladies, give them all the support you can. You never know, by the end of the month you may just start to enjoy the new Eddie Murphy or Hulk Hogan in your life.
