We don’t know about you, but we’re struggling to get out of bed a little more every morning as we crawl closer to winter. The days are already noticeably shorter and cooler and we can’t think of anything we’d rather do than get cosy on the couch with a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

 

Lockdown Level 4 is fast approaching and that means a little more freedom on the economic front. With certain sectors of the economy opening up, some items that weren’t available in store at Level 5 will now be made available for purchase, and we’re sure this will include some cold weather staples so that we can get ready for the winter months. 

 

So how do you prepare for winter?

 

Let’s start with your home:

  • Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks to prepare for winter rains.
  • Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys.
  • Make sure you don’t have any drafts sneaking in by installing weather stripping around windows and doors.
  • DIY and home improvement stores may be opening for essential services and products in the coming stages of lockdown. Keep an eye on the government’s website for any news and updates on the regulations. 
  • Cover your outside furniture or bring anything that can’t brave the cold inside for the next couple of months. 
  • Put out a basket of extra blankets in the living room to make movie nights even more comfy and cosy.
  • Arrange any extra candles you have around the house and crate some atmosphere. 
  • Swop your regular bedding for winter bedding or simply add an extra throw. Sleeping comfortably will make all the difference during the coming months.

 

Now let’s talk about your health:

  • It has been advised to get a flu shot every year to prepare for winter, but it may be especially beneficial during this time as an added buffer. Talk to your local pharmacist if you’d like to get one. 
  • Add some immune boosters to your shopping basket for the whole family to keep you fighting fit during the colder months.
  • Winter is notorious for bringing on bouts of depression, make a point of it to go outside and get some sunlight on your face when the chance arises, stay active and speak to a professional if you need help. Vitamin B12 has been proven to combat these feelings in some cases, so it might be a good idea to up your intake during winter.

What about your wardrobe?

  • If you do a seasonal wardrobe rotation every year, now’s the time to do it. Put your snug jerseys, warm sweatpants and winter socks front and centre, and pack away your summer dresses and shirts for later in the year.
  • While you’re rearranging your clothes, we’d suggest putting everything aside that you don’t really like or haven’t worn in a while to donate to your local organisations or someone in need. So many people’s incomes took a knock due to COVID-19, so do your part and donate what you don’t need. 
  • Master the art of layering. Have a fashion parade and find new and interesting combinations of items you can wear together to stay warm.
  • We’re not sure when clothing retailers will be able to go back to trading normally, but until then, you’ll have to make do with what you’ve got. And when they do, remember to use your bsmart card to pay for your winter wardrobe essentials.
  • Take up a new hobby and knit a scarf, beanie, socks and if you’re brave enough even a sweater.
